Biking home from Cambridge to Waltham. Somewhere on Arsenal Street, I'm at a stoplight and a 70 bus pulls up next to me. I recognize the bus; we've been leapfrogging each other for miles now, which is totally not unusual, and in my mind, is just a normal part of the ride. The door opens. The driver calls out at me, "You going all the way to Waltham?" "Yep." I see him dramatically roll his eyes and sigh as he closes the door. The light turns green and we pull out together. He guns it and is two lights ahead of me in no time.

I wonder what he meant. Was it a kind of, "Waltham is a long way, huh? This rain is shitty!" comment? Or, more likely, "Are you going to be in my way for the entire rest of my route?" I don't know what he was pissed about because there was no traffic, and as soon as we got out of the cluster of bus stops and stoplights of Cambridge and east Watertown, it was smooth sailing for him. I wonder if he was so categorically angry at bicyclists that, given the chance, he wouldn't think twice about brazenly opening his door and harassing one.

Whatever. It bothers me for the entire rest of my ride.

Six miles later in Waltham, I'm at a stoplight, and I hear the same bus pull up next to me. The door opens.
"I gotta say, you're pretty good!"
I say, "Hey, thanks. You too, we made it here in the same time!"
He laughs, genuinely. "Well, I got no passengers now, so I'm probably going to lose you."
"Well, I'm taking a right here anyways. Have a good night, drive safe!"
"You too!"

Maybe I changed a bus driver's mind tonight.

Mostly I fucking hate people. But tonight, readers, I have some hope for people. Especially, maybe, blonde people.

So Sarah and I went to Heroes tonight. I bought us some drinks, then later on, she bought us some drinks. She doesn't have much money, so it's really nice when she buys me a drink. So she brought me a drink and I put it down on this speaker next to which I was dancing (really well) and then a second later this blonde chick walks by, knocks the drink over, glances at it, glances at me, and then continues on to the stage.

So, I finish dancing to the song, then I say to Sarah, "That chick knocked over the drink you bought me." "Did she know?" "Yeah, she saw she did it." "What are you going to do?" "I'm going to talk to her." "Do you want me to talk to her?" Last time I was kind of drinking, and somebody was rude to us, I yelled at them. "I'm not going to yell at her, I'm just going to tell her she spilled me drink." "Do you want me to talk to her?" "No, it's cool, I got this."

I walked up on stage to the blonde chick. She was tossing her hair around so it was a little difficult to get her attention, but I did. "Hey, I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but you spilled my drink." "WHAT" "When you walked past that speaker, there, you spilled me drink, I think you saw me." "OH" "Yeah, and I would appreciate it if you bought me a drink." "OH" "To replace it, the one you spilled." "I'LL GET MY PURSE" "I'll wait here, because I don't really believe you." "I'LL GET MY PURSE AND MEET YOU OVER THERE" Then she went off to the side, and two chicks closed in between us, and I couldn't see her. At this point I realized I would have to fight my way through some chicks to follow the blonde chick to the side of the stage, where it might appear that I was harassing her, to get my money, or I could go back to the speaker and wait for her. "OK I'll wait for you over there." So I went over to the speaker.

Sarah was there, and I explained the situation to her. "Do you want me to talk to her?" "Yeah, because she isn't coming over to her, and if I go talk to her again, the bouncer might kick my ass." "Okay, wait!" Ten seconds later she's back with a twenty dollar bill in her hand. "She had it ready for me!" Awesome.

Back at Terri's bar, I order my drink. I'm pretty happy! A blonde chick spilled my drink, but maybe she was actually decent, and this was kind of restoring my faith in people. I got the drink, tipped Terri heavily, and want back out to the floor to give blonde chick the change. I put my drink on the speaker, turned towards the stage, and...

The drink was on the floor. I looked at Sarah, she looked at me. I turned around and climbed up the stage to the blonde chick and gave her the change. "OH ARE YOU OKAY" "Yes, thank you very much! I appreciate it." "ARE YOU ALL SET" "Yes, here's the change." "ARE YOU GOOD" "Thanks, bye!"

Back at the speaker, I picked up the fallen plastic cup, scooped up some ice, and put it on the speaker. I walked over to Sarah and I explained the situation to her. "Are you ready to go?" "Yeah, I'm ready to go."

And we left.

Mostly I fucking hate people, especially people who spill my drink, but tonight, it's okay.
